VETERAN ROCK N’ROLL SINGER/EVERLY BROTHERS BASS PLAYER JOEY PAIGE TO RELEASE NEVER-BEFORE-RELEASED ALBUM THIS SUMMER

July 23, 2021 / Oakland, CA

Veteran rock n’roll singer and early Everly Brothers touring bass player Joey Paige is set to release his first-ever solo album this summer, on July 23, 2021. The seven-song collection titled Lady Of Mine includes four songs penned by Paige, plus an additional three songs co-written with Phil Everly. The tracks were recorded in the late 1970’s with Everly, along with Los Angeles producers Mike Post and Russell DaShiell. The collection has been in Paige’s back pocket for roughly four decades, and will now also be part of a run-up to a soon-coming book release chronicling Paige’s life in the music business and beyond.

Paige grew up in Philadelphia, PA in the 1950’s. He picked up an upright bass in High School and joined his buddy’s band and then soon enough, a few more bands. Paige eventually moved over to a Fender Precision bass and got invited to audition for a group being put together by Dicky Doo of Dicky Doo & The Don’ts, which later became the backing band for The Everly Brothers. Paige toured with the brothers all through Europe and Australia, with support acts Bo Diddley, Little Richard and an up-and-coming English band, The Rolling Stones. Paige extended his stay in the UK after these tours to develop his act as a solo performer in the night clubs. A serendipitous opportunity came his way when Little Richard bowed out of the Duane Eddy/Shirelles tour in 1963 due to a conflict with the promoter and Paige was asked to take his place. In what proved to be a career-defining tour, Paige turned boos into cheers city-to-city and felt a major victory as a solo artist. When returning home to L.A. in 1964, Paige signed an artist recording contract with Veejay/Tollie Records, which led to future recording sessions and a handful of single releases.

Staying friends with Phil Everly post-tours led to the pair teaming up later in the 1970’s to work on new songs. Paige had a handful of his own ready to go, and together they worked out a few more in collaboration. These songs were recorded with producers Post and DaShiell in different studios and with their own crews of musicians, though much of the exact session details seem to have faded into the past. The tracks were shelved after completion, until now.

The album opens with a classic rock feel on the Paige/Everly co-write “Lover Goodbye”, a song that Tanya Tucker recorded for her 1978 album TNT and broke a million in sells. Second up is “I Just Can’t Let You Go”, a romantic power-ballad with a vintage drum machine beat and layered harmony vocals. Title track “Lady Of Mine” follows, one of Paige’s favorite songs he’s written, touching on lost love. Groove-rocker “Street People” comes next with a strong acoustic strum. Paige wrote the tune on a train ride home to Philly from NYC, inspired by the scenes of working people. “Remembering” slows things down in an epic, almost Orbison ballad manner. And in what could be an upbeat show closer, “You Broke It” (which was also recorded by Everly on his 1979 Living Alone) has Paige out in front of turned-up amps, pounding drums and tight harmony vocals. The album closes with “I Speak Your Name”, an anthemic finale, and one of the first tunes Paige ever wrote on his own.

Lady of Mine will be released by Paige independently with a little help from Mars Record Company in Oakland, CA. With the modern ease of digital distribution, and in the spirit of celebrating unearthed goodness, it seemed the time was ripe to finally release the set. A small run of hand-numbered/signed CDs will also be available through the Mars Record Shop website.
